Dry Scalp is a very common issue that can be caused by different factors such as the weather, allergies, hormones, diet, eczema, psoriasis, or even a bad hair care product. Dry scalp can be itchy and very uncomfortable especially under a weave or in extremely hot or cold weather. If you happen to have a dry and itchy scalp, there are different solutions for dealing with it.
Moisturise & Seal
Lack of moisture can cause your scalp to be dry, even if you install a protective style such as box or crochet braids. Spraying a moisturizing spray to your scalp will keep it healthy and hydrated. Your spray should be free of sulfates, parabens, silicones, petrolatum oils, and minerals. Instead, it should contain components such as water, glycerin, and extracts – hibiscus and cucumber are some of our favourites. And as always, moisture should always be sealed in with an oil. Oiling your scalp is a great way to add useful vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids to your hair, as well as nourish your scalp, encouraging growth, and maintaining moisture. Massaging oil into your scalp is also said to help stimulate blood circulation.
Try A Deep Conditioner
There are times when your scalp needs a little TLC if it feels dry. During these times, you should opt for an excellent deep conditioner to help improve hydration and elasticity. There are so many deep conditioners to choose from, however, the best options do not contain harmful substances. Hence, it is important to check out the components before purchasing. There are also a variety of DIY deep conditioners you could try.
You can also boost the effectiveness of your deep conditioner, by adding organic ingredients such as coconut oil and aloe vera juice to your hair.
Try A Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse
A very common reason for dry scalp is product buildup, which can also lead to severe breakage and frizz. A quick fix for product buildup is an apple cider vinegar rinse, as it leaves your scalp feeling restored. To get the best benefits of your ACV rinse, mix eight parts warm water and one part ACV. Use this mix immediately after you wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo. Leave it in for 2-5 minutes before rinsing it out.
Try A Scalp Massage
Another way you can help a dry scalp is by doing a scalp massage with your preferred essential oil. Scalp massage helps with blood circulation, as well as, soothe the scalp. You can try a 5-15 minute scalp massage about three times a week. Be sure to use the balls of your fingers to avoid scratching your scalp. Light oils such as jojoba, coconut, and grapeseed oil are great for scalp massages.
Drink Water
This might sound like a cliché, but it's a fact that the more water you drink, the more moisture every part of your body will have. This applies to your scalp as well. According to the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the healthy daily intake of water for men and women are 3.7L and 2.7L respectively.
Dry scalp can be caused by a number of factors, however, with these tips mentioned above, you can get rid of it as soon as possible.
